The year I was commissioned, a set of laws was passed in my home country. It proposed increased penalties for violence committed against Dolls - that's what we're called - and though it defined us as the property of humanity, it also stated we were owed a certain amount of dignity and safety, when moving in public places.
Before then, I am told disappearances, dismantlings, and other forms of violence were far more commonplace. The Act provided additional insurance for our safety, where we ourselves could not.
To look human to the casual observer is valuable to a Doll for many reasons... largely, it is a passive method of self defense. You see, we aren't made to be able to harm humans on our own volition.
