The guy really did just clamber up that tree like some overlarge squirrel. Id can't help but be surprised by the speed at which Link got up there, despite the lack of much by way of useful footholds. He knows well enough to surmise that comes from familiarity and experience, but he wouldn't have expected it.

"You do this often back home?" Id ventures a guess, between Link's efficient gathering and the way he approached that tree. He's not seeing anyone else nearby getting up there like it's mundane and routine.

On the other hand, he has observed a few people toppling over in the attempt.
