TDM #8

TEST DRIVE #8

The day begins as any other, you’re going about your day, living your life, when, without warning, you feel the world around you shift on its axis. You feel a great tear, welling from the depths of your soul as you are ripped from all you have known. If you’re lucky, you arrive in the wilderness of an unfamiliar world, where the language is foreign and the people are hostile. To make your escape, you must learn some language, flee, and occasionally fight, all to find your way off the floating isles you find yourself on and to the great ocean below, where rebel forces will welcome you.

If you’re unlucky, you materialize within a room full of armed guards and are quickly subdued with charged nets, stripped of your belongings, fitted with strange devices that suppress your powers and pressed into servitude. Your days are unimaginable pain and toil.

Fortunately, even in this world, there is still hope. For the denizens of this world have not given up. And it is for that dream of salvation that the Crimson Corsairs raise their flags and sail - for liberation. Perhaps you are one who has lived their entire life under the oppressive yoke of the Empire. Perhaps you have seen first hand your family and friends cut down by nobles hunting men for sport, or perhaps you have run afoul with the church and barely escaped with your life. No matter your origin, the Corsairs sail for you, for your freedom, for your life. And today, a taste of freedom will be won for all.

ARRIVAL/LIBERATION
The attacks on Bluvink and Vindess were wildly successful, but it also created the largest risk to Imperial citizens ever. Due to the heavy dealing with certain elements of the imperial citizenry, there has been a heightened risk at the Empire cracking down on them. In an effort to protect them, the Corsairs have welcomed a large number of refugees from Imperial settlements for the first time. While some servants were also liberated in the operation, a great deal of the Corsair’s airship resources were devoted to evacuation.

As such, the Vault is filled to the brim with people being processed and temporarily housed. Whole families have been displaced, and it’s hard to determine who might be willing to sell out the Corsairs for a chance to return when offered. Please be patient, like as not, you’ll be here for a while.

UNDERGROUND OVERCROWDING

In addition to the refugees, many of Flotsam’s regulars are currently residing in the Vault. While the settlement is quite large, even its capacity is starting to become overloaded. And with the clashing personalities of typical Vault and Flotsam residents, to say nothing of all of the Imperial refugees who have been ripped from their former lives and are now residing in an unfamiliar and, for Isle-dwellers disconcerting new home, tensions are running high. It’s pretty common for brawls to break out, although if you’re taking part or attempting to keep the peace is another story entirely.

CRITICAL REPAIRS

The fighting in the Isles Above was intense, and the airships did not escape unscathed. The ships have been brought into the Vault for intensive inspection and repairs, and those who are on duty are working day and night to get them fixed up in time for the next major operation. Whether you’re a craftsperson, hunter, gatherer, or salvager, chances are high that you’ve been tapped to procure or create material for these repairs, and you haven’t really had much time to rest.

It’s all right though, the foremen kindly left free pizza in the mess hall. That makes it fine, right?

WHEN YOU’RE LAND-BOUND, BETTER DRINK

Many of the Flotsam residents are going more than a little stir-crazy hiding out in the Vault. In what is certainly an extremely cunning plan without any potential downsides, the Vault has mobilized all of the Waterlogged Row’s purveyors of grog and set them up centrally within the Vault. And thus, the Flotsam citizens are able to engage in their favorite past-time. Getting extremely drunk. In enclosed quarters. In a city full of scholars that’s under constant bombardment.

Surely nothing will go wrong.

blessmefather: Matt holding his cane up and smirking. (he will poke you)

Matt snorts, faintly amused. "That's surprising? Rum is delicious; I'll give them that, but there are different foul concoctions consumed to get drunk as fast as possible. Kinda doubt they find the cure worse than what they order."

Matt covers his nose and mouth. He can still make out some of the smell, but he avoids the worst of it.

"Does that work for you?" he asks the Corsair who downed the drink. Sometimes he's amazed at what other people can tolerate in their mouths and sinuses. Drinking something similar would take exposure, repetition, and wild determination for Matt. He had gained a great amount of tolerance since childhood.
heaven_rooted: (ugh shut up already)

"Heh. That does seem true," Tau says dryly, eyes drifting back down the row of makeshift bars.

The Corsair has his eyes squeezed shut as he swallows, thumping the glass down on the table like he's just polished off an actual shot of liquor. He looks over at Matt for a moment as though not clearly seeing him, cheeks puffing out before the hearty, wet belch he fails to contain spills out from between his lips. Matt might reconsider whether the remedy smells worse on its own or topped off with whatever mixtures of grog the man had previously imbibed. Even Tau has to wrinkle his nose.

"Hoo- needed that..." the Corsair says, speech still somewhat slurred as he thumps a fist against his chest. "'s nasty on the way down but...starts kickin' in soon'nuff." He starts to laugh before putting a hand over his mouth for a moment, and even Tau goes tense in case he needs to make a grab for that bucket again. The moment seems to pass and the Corsair slowly straightens up again, swaying slightly, not quite directed at Matt when he starts talking again.

"Soon'enuff!" he assures, teetering slightly as he turns to stumble off to find somewhere to maybe sit and wait it out.

Tau sighs, shaking his head as he removes the used glass.
blessmefather: Matt with an amused smile. (how good can it be?)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-02-06 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Matt's brows raise at the belch and the oncoming wave of fumes from the Corsair. He raises a hand and attempts to wave some of it away from his face when it reaches him.

He turns to Tau after the Corsair stumbles away. "Sounds like an endorsement. You could be rich if you sold bottles at the market," he jokes.
heaven_rooted: (smirk)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-02-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Heh. If I did that then it'd defeat the purpose," Tau says, smirking a bit. "I'm not here to make a profit, I'm here to make sure idiots don't get themselves hurt or killed making worse decisions because of their already bad choices."
blessmefather: Matt grinning. (actual smile)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-02-07 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
"The Corsairs need as many people as they can get. You do them a big favor, making sure they live to see the next battle. Nobody enjoys showing up to the Underworld after an embarrassing accident." And it happens more often than people would like to think. He would know.

Matt tilts his head. "Are you a leader among them? You're taking on quite the responsibility."
heaven_rooted: (smirk)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-02-07 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Interesting choice of words. I doubt anyone 'enjoys' showing up in the Underworld period," Tau points out.

That question gets a bark of a laugh in response. "Hah! Leader- hardly," he says, snorting lightly at that. "I serve as a medic for the most part. So isn't keeping people functional my responsibility?"
blessmefather: Matt chuckling, exasperated. (I mean unless you want to)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-02-11 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you live a fulfilling life, it's probably not so bad," Matt says, giving a little shrug as if it isn't odd to chat about the Underworld in casual conversation.

"Ah, no wonder you know how to cure a hangover!" Matt joins him chuckling. "And with- are those all natural ingredients? They reek to my sensitive nose, but it doesn't smell uh... highly processed, if that makes sense? I should have guessed you were an herbalist, now that I think about the evidence here."
heaven_rooted: (neutral)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-02-11 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hm." He doesn't seem to have too much of an opinion there, but such talk is something he's only been exposed to by being around other people.

Tau smiles faintly as he starts going through the ingredients he has, selecting carefully preserved leaf from a cloth wallet of sorts. He drops it into the mortar. "Of course. True, some of them do smell pretty bad once you crush them, but if it actually tasted or smelled good wouldn't it be more suspect?"

He starts to apply the pestle to grind the leaf against stone, but at least this one doesn't give off such a sharp, gut-churning scent. "Eh, I know my way around plants is all."
blessmefather: Matt with a neutral expression. (Default)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-03-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Right. What's that saying? Good medicine is bitter?" Matt muses. He notices the slightly better scent from the new leaf and breathes a little easier.

A healer, not a leader, would likely be someone who could speak accurately to the nature of the Corsairs. "I'm thinking of joining the Corsairs properly; I'm not half bad at information collection. But I wasn't sure how uh... Dedicated they are to taking an ethical approach to the rebellion. Not to mention how they would receive a blind man."
heaven_rooted: (Hm)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-03-01 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Phn. I don't think they're very picky about who wants to join so long as they're sincerely in agreement with the goals and not afraid to get their hands dirty when the situation calls for it."

Tau pauses in his grinding, arching a brow at the man. "So long as you're able to handle yourself and know your limitations, I don't think they'd be picky about anything like that. Depends on who you end up working alongside though. Some will be more open-minded than others, and others might not want to risk any victories if they think you might be a weak point. Ethical though...?"

Matt might get the impression that that suggestion is even more confusing to Tau than the thought of a blind man wanting to join in on things, the question an invitation to expound.
blessmefather: Matt with a neutral expression. (Default)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-03-01 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ethical as in... Are they above committing atrocities to fight the Empire's atrocities? Would they, say, encourage their healers to experiment on people to create better fighters, even if it means forcing participation and killing in the process?" The term war crime isn't exactly something that the Empire put into their books. Maybe it existed in the past, but Matt isn't familiar with it, so he gives an imagined example.
heaven_rooted: (...)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-03-01 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Tau's expression darkens. Maybe it's not so imagined as he might think, at least for some parts.

"I've heard that recently we extracted a few survivors from an Imperial facility who were used in experiments for some type of drug. Children. There were even more found dead. Our people weren't too happy about it."

He resumes crushing the leaf, bringing the pestle around to make sure the powder is fine.

"If we use the same methods the Empire has been using, how will that make us any better? Most of the people fighting on this side come because of desperation, and because they've experienced how bad the Empire can be.

"There's nothing ethical about a war. People get killed. People kill. That's already something that's been established and accepted. I'd hope any self-respecting healer would know better than to agree to any suggestions of experimentation. What good is winning a war if we lose ourselves?"
blessmefather: Matt holding his cane up and smirking. (he will poke you)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-04-01 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Matt doesn't look surprised by the news about the Empire's experiments. He had been a victim of their irresponsible chemical disposal and it was clear in his mind their labs were full of dangerous materials. No doubt people were exposed to that in some shape or form.

"Well said," he agrees. "That's what I hoped you'd say." Matt smiles. "I think I'll be joining soon. Maybe we'll be working together in the future."
heaven_rooted: (smirk)

[personal profile] heaven_rooted 2025-04-01 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hn. Hope you find what you're looking for."

Tau gives him a nod, a smirk tugging at his lips. "This is going to start to smell so if you'd rather avoid a repeat of earlier, I advise you not sticking around," he suggests as he pulls out more ingredients for the concoction.
blessmefather: Matt smirking, amused. (I need more vines apparently)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2025-04-02 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll excuse myself than..." Matt says, unable to hold back a laugh. "May fortune smile upon you, Stranger," he bids him goodbye as he makes for the doorway to get away from the stench.
