Test Drive Meme #1

TEST DRIVE #1

The day begins as any other, you’re going about your day, living your life, when, without warning, you feel the world around you shift on its axis. You feel a great tear, welling from the depths of your soul as you are ripped from all you have known. If you’re lucky, you arrive in the wilderness of an unfamiliar world, where the language is foreign and the people are hostile. To make your escape, you must learn some language, flee, and occasionally fight, all to find your way off the floating isles you find yourself on and to the great ocean below, where rebel forces will welcome you.

If you’re unlucky, you materialize within a room full of armed guards and are quickly subdued with charged nets, stripped of your belongings, fitted with strange devices that suppress your powers and pressed into servitude. Your days are unimaginable pain and toil.

Fortunately, even in this world, there is still hope. For the denizens of this world have not given up. And it is for that dream of salvation that the Crimson Corsairs raise their flags and sail - for liberation. Perhaps you are one who has lived their entire life under the oppressive yoke of the Empire. Perhaps you have seen first hand your family and friends cut down by nobles hunting men for sport, or perhaps you have run afoul with the church and barely escaped with your life. No matter your origin, the Corsairs sail for you, for your freedom, for your life. And today, a taste of freedom will be won for all.

ARRIVAL/LIBERATION
This month, the Crimson Corsairs raided a Larendt labor camp in order to obtain much-needed parts and textiles as well as liberate another batch of servants for the cause. The raid was executed under the cover of night, with one team sweeping the dormitories and gathering as many servants as they could while the other team hit factories as they could, focusing on taking important items like ship parts and clothing, loading them into prepared trams and fleeing before the guard could mobilize. The operation, thankfully, went off without a hitch, and the Corsairs were able to usher a number of servants into their waiting ships.

As dawn breaks, the raiding fleet docks at Flotsam as the city-fleet begins the long journey away from the continent before a retaliation fleet can be mobilized. The former servants are finally let above deck. The sun is beating down hard on them, its brilliance marking their first step into freedom.

Corsairs on the fleet will have a lot to do - the new arrivals will need to be sorted, clothed, and fed. Many are emaciated from the conditions in the labor camp, and the former servants will be immediately ushered to a mess hall for their first meal as free folk. Corsairs will be needed to organize the movement, prepare and serve the food, and also just sit with them and talk to them, helping them adjust and filling them in on the situation.

Former servants will have found the entire process exhausting to say the least. They were awoken in the dead of night by heavily armed people quickly moving through, shattering their chains and ushering them into ships. The entire night was spent sailing, and while the hull is dark it is crowded and difficult to sleep in. Finally, upon arrival they are ushered into a meal hall and served a humble meal - but a meal that far exceeds anything that was ever served at the servant’s table. What is known is that they are now free.

MEANWHILE IN THE WATERLOGGED ROW…

With another successful mission under their belt and their duties more or less complete, the triumphant Corsairs observe a time-honored tradition: heading to the Waterlogged Row and getting absolutely shitfaced on awful grog.

The mood is jubilant and self-congratulatory, with drinking songs ringing out across Flotsam. In consideration to other residents, the Row is currently moored a good distance from the residential areas to keep the celebrations from disturbing what little peace there is in the chaotic town that is Flotsam. But for those who participated in the mission, tonight is about celebration. Singing, storytelling, socializing, this is the glue that holds the operations team together. And as the Crimson Corsairs do not officially recognize a drinking age, everyone is welcome! Even if they probably shouldn’t be!

New arrivals are, of course, not at all restricted so those who finish their meal and go exploring will quickly find the Row, as well as many Corsairs eager to buy them a pint to toast their newfound freedom.

MAKING THE GOOD STUFF

Elysium often serves as the crux of Corsair operations, and the next operation is no different. While the operations team is carousing and toasting their success, the planning team is hard at work preparing for the next mission.

The order of the day is gathering, which has brought the team to the forests outside of Elysium. In the coming month, Elysium will host a lavish party for the guards of a certain continent, and it is the duty of the gatherers to ensure that any drink served is “enhanced”, with such potency that they won’t be in any position to do their duty when the raiders strike.

Any herbology specialists will be absolutely vital for this operation. While the Corsairs have some documents and know, generally, what they’re looking for, there are a wide variety of things that grow within the forest, many of which can be quite dangerous.

Those new to gathering will really need to watch their step. Elysium is rich in hallucinogens, and a whiff of the wrong flower or mushroom could leave them contemplating their navel for the next hour. Tasting is out of the question, but what they don’t know can’t hurt them right? After all, the Elysium workers spend a lot of time eradicating poisoned growths to keep wandering nobles safe so anything they find can’t be THAT bad. Right?

And of course, for experienced foragers, they will find an entirely new duty thrust upon them - keeping the newbies in line. Really, how can they expect anything productive to be done when they send a bunch of green recruits into a forest full of hallucinogens?

EDUCATION AS THE BOMBS FALL

New Corsairs almost always find themselves in the Vault. Nestled in the earth and subject to the constant pounding of munitions overhead, the Vault is the repository of knowledge for the Crimson Corsairs and the place where new inductees are educated. Language instruction, education on the world and its people, writing, reading, arithmetic, just about any kind of learning can be done in the Vault’s halls.

Notable about the Vault’s education is how deeply tied it is to the Crimson Corsair’s broader philosophy - everyone’s unique talents and insight have value. As such, Corsairs are often called to the Vault to share their specialized expertise. While many Corsairs do choose to become full-time teachers, any Corsair can come and teach a class.

For the new Corsairs, now is a time to learn and train, acclimate themselves to their situation and figure out where they want to go from here. For established Corsairs, this is an opportunity to meet the new recruits and help train them so they can help with the cause. Those who might be students today will be comrades standing at your side tomorrow, so teach them well.

DANGER AT SEA

As the most mobile of the Corsair’s settlements and the only obvious Imperial target, Flotsam is well equipped to deal with any number of dangers. One such danger is the enormous sea monsters who dwell within the Eternal Ocean. While many are not too keen to tangle with such a large fleet, occasionally a monster will become angry or territorial enough to try to attack the fleet.

And it is for that reason that the Corsairs now find themselves battling a massive sea serpent that has stretched itself across the western edge of the fleet. New Corsairs aren’t expected to assist in this battle, but as the sinking of Flotsam would be VERY BAD for those who are currently trying to live on it, many will jump in anyway, especially as they should have been issued weapons. As to established Corsairs, well, you know the drill by now. Monster bad, try to sink ship, let’s convince it that there are easier marks than the pride of the Corsair fleet.

Some Corsairs will need to man the cannons to blow it away, but many will get up close and personal, jumping into melee range to drive it away from the ships and mitigate as much damage as they can. Others still will provide support from the back with magic or ranged weaponry, and still others will need to weave their way in between the battle to carry out wounded Corsairs for medical attention. Whatever your specialty, your city needs you. Best get to work.

No? Would you like to be submerged a second time?

[ Celes hunkers down by the riverbank, her elbows resting loosely on her knees, as she looks down at RPK with a forbidding expression. ]

What the devil possessed you to get drunk by... by eating leaves?!
2mao: (poison poison poison)

[personal profile] 2mao 2024-06-02 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's less about being worse than stomach acid and more the fact that it's already done damage going down, so it would only be compounded going back up as well, and - wait, why are discussing poisons in the narration?

Maomao was likewise caught in her thoughts about poisons, until a student snaps her out of it. "Oh, um, right. Sorry." Cough. "Now normally, we deal with ingested poisons because it's easy to disguise, easy to carry, and easy to administer - relatively." War crimes? What are those? "It's also much easier to adjust the dosage to be nonlethal, when you have to care about things like that." Her tone is carefully flat in this part.

"And so using these kinds of poisons, getting the stomach free of the poison will help. Though, of course, depending on the timing, it can still be too little and too late. So I do recommend keeping some emetic with you at all times, if you're going to be working with either poisons or in treatment." She pulls up a small pouch at her side and shakes it to show it off.

"Any questions so far?"

"Unpoisoning?"

In his addled state, it took Ziel an extra second or two to come to the extremely obvious conclusion.

"Antidote." He supplied the Imperial word.

Then, after another moment of wandering thoughts he added on: "Yes."
2mao: (pulling it out)

[personal profile] 2mao 2024-06-02 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
A deep sigh. What would Maomao's teacher think, her using her skills for something like this? An apothecary's job was to make medicines, not poisons. But she was in Musse's employ. And, more to the point, the Empire deserved what was coming.

"How comfortable, my Lady?" Comfort was quite a wide range, after all. A drunk was comfortable. A sleeper was comfortable. And, well, one could presume that somebody sleeping and to never wake up again was, likewise, also comfortable.

[The edge of Eva's lips quirk just a little.]

I can imagine. It's not fair that you all from the outside get dragged into this like you do.

[Not that this new recruit needs to hear that but Eva is sympathetic for sure. She huffs out a laugh as they continue walking.]

Oh I'm biased. I practically grew up in the Vault. If you've got an interest in learning though then this is the place to be. Machinery, restricted books, whatever new stuff gets dropped outside of the others bring here -- you'll be up to your eyeballs in research if you stick around. And if that's your thing of course.

Eva can't help but laugh. "I'd almost rather eat some of these plants than drink the grog over in Flotsom." It's clear she's making a joke though.

"I think some of the nobles have a little more time than sense though and are mostly looking for ways to kill said time."

[Without looking, Gohan could tell that someone was nearby. However, they also seem to have no ill intent, so he isn't bothered. He simply keeps going through his exercises until he reaches what he thinks is a good break point. Then, he looks over with a wave.]

Hi! Can I help you?

[Gohan says the above in the local language. He had been fortunate enough to run into another person who could speak his native tongue (more or less) who taught him a few basic phrases.]

[ Übel shrugs and laces her hands behind her back with a kind of faux-innocent posture. ]

Hehe, touché. This is just the sort of outfit I'm comfortable in.

Sorry those noble jerks stuck you in something like that. Of course the first thing out of my mouth was insensitive...

[ She lets out a wistful sigh. ] Always seems to happen when I meet someone pretty.

Donnie isn't the only teen at the Academy that looks forward to learning. Ever since getting here, Gohan has jumped at every opportunity to further his own knowledge. Most of his work lately has gone toward learning the local language, since he can't learn much if he can't communicate, after all. He's been a quick study, but he still has much to learn about it.

And so he comes across Donnie, and as chance would have it, he's looking for people to help him practice his grasp of the language. He's certainly no stranger to beastkin, with them being pretty common in his own world -- though the only turtle he's ever been able to talk to had been a non-humanoid sea turtle.

"Hello." Gohan takes a seat across the table. "What are you working on?"

Education

[personal profile] minorinasskicking 2024-06-02 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time that Gohan had been to the Vault, he hadn't been able to get the full summary of it, given that he didn't know the language yet. Now, though, he's been studying it for a little while, so he can at least partially follow along. So he thought he'd slip in with one of the groups of newer recruits to hear it.

"Yes, um." It takes him a few seconds to figure out how to say what he wants to say. "What are the training facilities like? I need to keep finding new ways to get stronger."

Machinery? I'm curious, but I admit I don't know much about what you might have. My home didn't even have Ether.

Ah, but in Larendt... they did have me work on a loom, quite often? Lots of quick, sliding parts... maybe that's not that exciting, but I can say I'm not that nervous about getting "bit" by something complicated.

[ Übel has her elbows on the table in front of her and her chin in her hands. She could really use this kind of lesson, actually, but is that going to tamper down her usual behavior? Obvious answer. ]

Considering you're a noble... should I expect some kind of punishment if I start mouthing off to teacher?

The opportunity to do so was limited, so I decided to do it for fun. It was an interesting experience... particularly in how it compelled the behavior of those around me.

Tandy Bowen | Marvel's Cloak & Dagger | OU

[personal profile] hopeytouchything 2024-06-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Arrival
Tandy Bowen was very good at being where she did not belonged. She was also sort of used to being dragged places by powers beyond her control.

She dusted herself off and surveyed the woods she was in. Entirely foreign to anything she'd seen before. The air was wrong for anywhere in the U.S. Same with the plants, it was all just slightly wrong. Then she did what she always did when the universe played with her like this, she drew her knife.

Well, drawing suggests a sheath, summon is more accurate. A gemstone of pure blinding white light in her hand. Her powers worked, so she wasn't in the spirit world again. And even if Ty wasn't here, she and he were still connected. “Okay Tandy, we find Ty and go home. He can get us home.”

Then she pressed into the woods.
Waterlogged Row
(OOC: Tandy's going to try to read anyone's hopes when she touches them. If you don't want her to read them, her powers will just fail because Ty isn't around and that messes up her powers. Or grab her by the wrist without touching her skin when she gets close.)
Tandy had not made herself known to Flotsam as she found her way there. Resorting to old habits. Tandy is many things. Half of a Set. Dancer. The Embodiment of Hope.

But for this, she's a thief.

She stowed away on a vessel, stole herself a hat and jacket, and made her way into the floating town. She speaks the language enough, but not so much she feels comfortable talking. With that tidbit in mind she shut up. Resorting to another old habit.
She wasn't picking pockets, exactly. But she's cute, and harmless looking, and a flirty glance with a gentle touch gets you far. Especially a touch that reads the deepest hopes of a person.

It isn't working every time, which is a concern she'll need to worry about later. But it gives her a general sense of what she's dealing with. Especially with how many hopes are built on freedom. People hoping for something so basic is never, ever a good sign.
Education - 1
Tandy has never actually been dumb. She plays dumb, boys like it when you're just a little unaware. Let them explain basic things while your flirty touch gains you a wallet. A watch. A keycard. So now that she's gotten the lay of the land she's going to do the boring bit.
Research.

She's got a small notebook as she copies over whatever feels relevant about how this place works. Her papers lit by the light eminating from her palm. Ty had always been a little more reserved using their powers in public. That wasn't her, and her palm was a good source of light to read by.

She occasionally takes a break to listen to others talk about things, figure out what the local lingo is, better settle in. Better pass for ‘normal.’ She's not, but being able to move around unworthy of concern is another talent she'd desperately like back.
Education - 2
Her eyes hurt from reading, and her head hurt from waiting. So Tandy decided to blow off some steam. She was in the target range throwing daggers.

Dagger being the best term for the small long gemstones of light she made, which easily cut through… well, anything really. Also being made of light they didn't really get influenced by air resistance or gravity. So her accuracy was incredible.

And she didn't have to collect them from the targets, once they hit they just… faded away. And reappeared in her hand. It was hard to tell if the look in her eye was focus, or frustration.

In truth, Tandy didn't know either.

[The man Sirius is talking to does not seem to be all right. A mix of a stubborn and unyielding personality and a background that ranged form 'privileged' to 'ultra privileged' meant Aerich had quickly been identified as a discipline problem, and singled out for attention.]

[Aerich recalled as a young man, he had met a foreign prince who had spent time in Aerich's homelands as a serf, to learn enough of sorcery to have the advantage when he returned home. But that had been voluntary, with intention of leaving (even if the landowner had not known the status of the man from the east, nor his intention to leave). But it was a story he could hold onto, even if Aerich had met the man in the context of negotiating a treaty before the foreign army invaded.]

[Aerich gave a shrug to Sirius. By standards of the recent days, he was 'all right', but nothing about this situation was right, and he had been rather ill-treated since his arrival.]

I am well.

[Neutral, inoffensive. Aerich was a quick hand at languages even when learning them for fun. He'd also quickly assessed that he was talking to someone the locals considered of equal rank to him. If he was going to offend someone, he was going to do it on purpose and bear the consequences.]

Momo waits while Gohan figures out how to say what he wants to say. She's impressed; he hasn't been here long but his grasp of the language is coming along nicely. "Those will be over in the Academy." She replies, slowing her words a bit to give Gohan time to process. "I spend quite a lot of time there myself. Would you like me to show you?"

She waves someone else over to take over the group, who are more interested in the Library, which she can't fault them for. However, seeing someone from another world fight is an opportunity she can't pass up.

"You can call me Momo, by the way. How are you finding the Vault so far?"
creativiti: (momo96)

[personal profile] creativiti 2024-06-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Momo laughs. She's spent a little time in Flotsom, and she's in no hurry to try what passes for the local liquor there.

All that money and power, and they're so bored they think wandering into the woods to eat hallucinogenic plants is a fun past-time. "I suppose there's a certain safety in it." She admits. "They know they'll be looked after, and it's an activity unlikely to draw the Emperor's attention." Having too much scrutiny from the Throne on your house can be a very bad thing, even for a noble. Momo's family is proof enough of that.

"It doesn't require their guard to be up all the time."
creativiti: (momo67)

[personal profile] creativiti 2024-06-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Momo examines the books Musse is holding and nods. "Yes, though I'd hardly call myself an expert in the field. Still, it helps to be familiar with at least the basics of their operation." She turns to the rest of the group to address them. "Everyone pitches in where they can. You never know when you might be called upon to help with some maintenance, so doing a little advanced reading in advance can be helpful. There are also some beginner courses taught at the Academy that you may wish to consider signing up for as well. The Corsairs couldn't survive without co-operation, not just between our three branches, but everyone else working together as well."

This is actually very helpful. Musse is being quite the excellent assistant. Momo will have to thank her once they're done, she thinks, idly tucking the book she still hasn't given back under her arm.
creativiti: (momo13)

[personal profile] creativiti 2024-06-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Good thinking." Momo replies, zipping her jacket back up. Her power is useful, but requires a lot of exposed skin to use efficiently. She makes do as best she can with it.

And those hours spent training speak for themselves, really.

"I'll collect the red ones, and you take the maroon. Agreed?" She asks. It's not ideal, but the Corsairs are good at improvising; surely the wrong ones will find some use.

Still feels a lot like a screw-up, though.

[Leaning back in her chair, Jade huffs, propping her feet up on the table. She extends the now-empty tankard for a passing employee to begrudgingly take. The absolute audacity of this woman.

[Afterwards, she looks at him with an arched brow.]

Of course they do. Or they'll expect us to fuck off so we don't waste their resources, but even still, I'm guessing they want something in return. Everybody always does.

[While she could try and go with the latter, she knows what happened the last time she tried to run from her "responsibilities" by running away. It didn't end well.]

Oh.

[Honestly, were the offering not coming from a cute face, Jade might've flipped the bowl right out of poor Marcille's hands for even entertaining the notion.

[It's okay, she doesn't know. She doesn't know.]

Sorry, I... can't eat that. Pork's never sat well with me -- or most meat, for that matter.

[The smell is too reminiscent of memories of burning flesh she'd rather push down and not think about right now.]
