And before I get onto the rest of of her info...please go and take a look at her Opt-out / Permissions page! Because she who will absolutely be villaining it up, mostly by dishing out terrible curses on people, so absolutely let me know if you need to nope out of anything.

CHARACTER BLURB:
Born just over a century ago as the planestouched daughter of a distant branch the Imperial family, in her first few decades of life Maleficent used a combination of political maneuvering and the crafting of cruel and brutal ether-curses to gather power around herself. She never married or bore children, but she nonetheless became the undisputed matriarch of a branch of the Imperial family, gaining the title of Duchess.

But she always ruled over the branch, and never the main tree. Her public face has always been that of an obedient power behind the throne; a trusted advisor and devoutly loyal imperial family member. To the enemies of the imperial throne - any do any who dare cross her or simply displease her - Maleficent is a figure to be feared. Because Maleficent, as they say, delivers fates that are worse than death.

DESIRED CR:
Dear Corsairs! Let her find you. Know you. Crush you.

Maleficent is a very high-ranking noble, and is a prominent Imperial figure. Do you want your character to have encountered Maleficent previously, in what was most likely a terrible experience? Let me know! We can hash out backstory.

I really liked our thread in the TDM, but I suspect Ilphyl will be avoiding Maleficent if at all possible. (And/or trying to disguise themselves -- they really are too distinctive-looking to do much now that the Corsairs are actively being hunted.)

Honestly avoiding Maleficent is the entirely smart and logical action to take

And happy to keep it canon if you want to! If you'd like Ilphyl to encounter her again too, despite avoiding her...I'm sure we can find ways to make that happen :P

Sure. I'm fine with cursing Ilphyl, especially as their own magic can be used to lift curses, but not anything on themselves. (It came up in the original D&D game I played Ilphyl in -- they got bitten by a werewolf and needed to find someone else to help out rather than heal themself and the other afflicted person.)

Since curses are a big part of Maleficent's villain plot, I'd probably say that Ilphyl should need something else in addition to the Remove Curse spell in order to remove them. ~~otherwise everyone could get magically cured right after getting cursed, and where's the fun in that? XD~~. Basically, I'm totally open to Ilphyl finding a way to remove the curses, but it absolutely should not be easy and should be something they can only do for a very limited number of people.

I should also note though, characters will not be cursed permanently. So no one's gonna be stuck with it forever.

That's fair. It could just be that they aren't a powerful enough spellcaster to deal with anything that Maleficent puts effort into -- Ilphyl can undo things she doesn't intend to last early, but they can't do anything against a curse she intended to be indefinite. (Or can only temporarily block the effects as long as they concentrate on it.)

Or we curse Ilphyl so they can't access their own magic or undo her spells.

Or both; if Maleficent realizes that someone among the Corsairs can even touch her curses even if it is not enough to undo them, that person becomes a priority target.

I like the 'can only temporarily block' idea! That would allow Ilphyl to have impact with their spellcasting without negating the curses entirely.

And we'll see what Maleficent realises! But yes, any kind of interference with her curses - even if only temporary - would be enough to incur her wrath...

I love it when a plot comes together.

My very first thought is that Maleficent and Natalia are already in a game of cat and mouse/rivalry and neither realizes it yet or knows who is which one

but maybe not? that seems a little much given that Villains do be Villains...

Or worse, Maleficent trying to use Natalia as a cats' paw to take out Imperial nobles (maybe sympathizers, maybe just people in Maleficent's way, possibly both, who knows)

because one part of Natalia's backstory is that she has, in fact, killed a noble. (pro tip: do not play the most dangerous game with natalia. she is simply the best there is.)

there's a LOT we can do with these facts and vague ideas I'm just not sure what exactly

I'm not sure an existing rivalry would really make sense - Maleficent is very, very high in rank, and she absolutely views almost everyone as being insignificant little peons who are far, far beneath her. She also doesn't tend to kill rival nobles ~~Maleficent prefers her victims to be alive and suffering~~, so the cats paw approach might not work either.

But maybe there's some possibility of her having interfered with Natalia's village in some manner? (although apologies, I'm at work so I haven't been able to re-familiarise myself with the particulars of her village).

Thomas likely has met her while performing his day job as secretary/bearucract, and is suitably TERRIFIED of her. His father, Lord Tarquin Lowma is the kind of noble far more interested in securing his current power than having overt ambition, so he likely would be deferential to her as social protocols demand - but wouldn't be above trying to curry favor if it suits his purpose.

Maleficent is absolutely someone others might try to curry favour with (or more importantly: make sure to avoid incurring any disfavour), so there definitely could be some connections there!

oh certainly, also free permission to curse either of my characters if it feels appropriate - Harlock can be too cocky for his own good and occasionally needs to be smack with humility.

Being cocky around Maleficent is definitely a good way to get cursed!

I'm going to go with keeping their thread IC. Let's say he wasn't wearing his usual mask when they met since he'd have been attempting to at least been incognito XD ...which is kind of a funny reverse actually

Sounds good! Feel free to bring in the effects of his curse when you like then :P
